Adobe has apologised for a system failure that disabled its Creative Cloud service for users around the world for almost 24 hours. Creative Cloud is the firm's subscription model for businesses or individuals using its Photoshop, Premiere Pro and similar products. Even though many businesses were unable to carry out busines as usual, the company has not offered any form of compensation for those affected. Users who had already downloaded the software and were using it offline were not affected, but those trying to download new software and features, or using the service's cloud storage function to save and share files online, had difficulty.

The so called “Google Glass Explorer Edition” is now on sale to the public in the US for the price of £1,500. Google opened sales of Glass to the US public for one day in April, making it briefly available to people other than just a selected group of users such as app developers. The consumers version is supposed to go on sale to the general public towards the end of 2014. A stamp-sized electronic screen mounted on the side of a pair of eyeglass frames, Google Glass can record video, access email, provide turn-by-turn driving directions and retrieve information from the web by connecting wirelessly to a user's phone.

Sci-fi enthusiasts will love the new 3D interface that has been developed that allows users to "touch" the air to make selections. It uses a 3D camera and specially designed glass to create an interactive, 3D illusion. The interface could be used in public places such as cash dispensers or photo booths in the future, for a more secure and hygienic experience, according to its developers. The proof of concept device was shown off by Intel's Perceptual Computing Lab at a London event.

On Tuesday 13th May we brought some of the hottest brands in e-commerce to the lovely Sartoria Restaurant for another SLI Systems Retail Leaders Lunch. This time we had the chance to hear from Catriona Campbell, Director at Seren about what her work with popular companies such as Boden, Barclays and Dell has taught her about online user experience. After some networking Catriona informed the audience about her early beginnings in learning about human computer interaction at university and how she soon realised that user experience all links back to psychology. One mistake that companies used to make was leaving the design of websites and campaigns to designers who didn’t keep the customers and their needs in mind. To emphasise this point, Catriona asked to a lady in the audience to say her telephone number out loud and soon after she asked the same of a gentleman guest. The difference in how the woman and the man responded (the lady said her number slowly, pausing every 3 digits while the man said it all at once, quickly and without pausing) explains the different behaviour between the two genders, that can be translated into the different ways they shop online. To understand the importance, Catriona used the example of Dell, who uses the concept of Personas - a sort of prototype of the typical customer, the psychological profile of a person to feed their strategy. The Persona of the year according to Dell is Kate, a 28 year old woman who was originally using a Mac as a student, but now she is in the working world she needs a PC, she wants social recognition, wants to check reviews about the product, wants to make sure it can do the things she needs it to do but is more interested in the colour of the laptop than in the technical characteristics! She is a main focus for their current marketing efforts and they plan all activity accordingly. As you can see, the different Personas have nothing to do with market segmentation, but they are all about behaviour and what real customers want from their retailers in everyday life. The best way to make the most of these findings is creating a customer journey map on which to base your marketing strategy. Of course, defining the different Personas is not the only important step for a successful marketing strategy. Knowing how to exploit all the data and knowing what is happening on your website is essential and with all of the new technology solutions on the market, it is becoming an easier process. We would like to say thank you to SLI Systems for this great lunch and for their brilliant insights into their SaaS solutions that include site search, navigation, merchandising, mobile, product recommendations and user-generated SEO and to Catriona Campbell for her session and for sharing her vast experience with us.
