For years the film and music industry have been fighting for tougher and harder penalties for online piracy. Under new plans being considered by the government, online pirates could face jail terms of up to 10 years bringing it into line with copyright infringement of physical goods.  At the moment Online copyright infringement carries a maximum penalty of two years' imprisonment. The government said tougher sentences would act as a "significant deterrent".
