Facebook criticised for psychology experiment

Facebook has been criticised after it emerged it had conducted a psychology experiment on more than 600,000 users without their knowledge. The test saw Facebook modify news feeds to control which emotional expressions the users were exposed to. The research, that was done in cooperation with two American universities, didn't lead to the unnecessary collection of personal data and that the data wasn't associated with a specific person's account. Some raised concern, however, over the impact such studies could have and over the way the research was conducted.

Amazon is facing a battle with UK publishers as it seeks to secure more advantageous terms in its latest round of contract negotiations. The web giant wants the right to print books itself if publishers fail to provide adequate stock, and wants publishers to match any pricing deals it offers to other distributors. One mid-sized firm accused Amazon of "bullying," and warned that the company was destroying the industry.

Google has announced the first smartwatches powered by its Android Wear operating system are now available for pre-order. The LG G Watch and Samsung Gear Live, both featuring rectangular screens, mark an attempt to standardise the way Android wearable devices function. Google said that Motorola's circular Moto 360 would not be released until later this summer. Analysts say the move to a unified approach could drive sales.
SLI Systems Retail leaders Lunch with Practicology
Martin Newman, CEO of Practicology was our keynote speaker for the day and he gave us brilliant insights into how brands should change their strategy to drive sales through meaningful customer engagement.
Last week we had the pleasure of hosting another edition of the SLI Systems Retail Leaders Lunch at Hush Mayfair in Central London.

Martin Newman, CEO of Practicology was our keynote speaker for the day and he gave us brilliant insights into how brands should change their strategy to drive sales through meaningful customer engagement.

Martin, who has been involved in multichannel retailing for over 25 years, founded Practicology four years ago after running successful Ecommerce departments at numerous large well respected brands. During this time it became clear to him that it was essential for a consultancy to deliver “practical advice” that could be useful for the every-day issues of a retailer.

Martin started off introducing how customer engagement means putting the customer at the heart of your business and at the heart of what you do. There are too many retailers who take customer loyalty for granted when they should be focusing on how to make it the most convenient they possible can to make a purchase.

Making the payment process easier and quicker, giving the possibility of saving favourite items or giving advantageous delivery options are just a couple of good differentiators that could give a boost to a business. ASOS for example introduced flexible and customer friendly options sending a night-before notice text about the delivery time and Schuh offers 11 different delivery options.

Another key factor not to underestimate is the importance of mobile purchases. Smartphones and tablets are becoming a bigger part of people’s everyday life and brands are pushed to introduce tools such as click-to-call phone numbers, geolocation or autocomplete for mobile searches. This can lead to a substantial increase in sales- Schuh for example saw a 30% increase of its sales thanks to smartphones and tablets.

The main challenge of this change of focus is not only having the skills for rethinking a strategy but also reinventing the whole structure of the company. New roles, such as the Chief Customer Officer or Customer Journey Manager, are being introduced in order to predict what customers really want to buy and to study their behaviour.

Many companies like Amnesty International, Tesco and Sainsbury’s are reorganising their structure giving life to a digital transformation that will be essential for their success.

We would like to say thank you to SLI Systems for this great lunch and for their brilliant insights into their SaaS solutions that include site search, navigation, merchandising, mobile, product recommendations and user-generated SEO and to Martin Newman for his session and for sharing his knowledge with us.
