PepsiCo’s crisp brand Walkers have had yet another PR nightmare, when the manufacturer saw its Champions League Twitter campaign hijacked within hours of its launch. The campaign, which was giving fans the chance to win tickets to the Champions League final in Cardiff, had asked Twitter users to respond to a Tweet from the Walkers Crisps account by adding a selfie and the #WalkersWave hashtag. The selfie was then incorporated into a personalised video, featuring the face of Walkers Gary Lineker, and then automatically tweeted out. Of course, this backfired as twitter users began sending photos of infamous serial killers and disgraced celebrities, including Fred West, Rolf Harris, Jimmy Saville, and many more. Walkers was forced to pull the campaign from Twitter and delete the undesirable replies that it received.

Stephen Fry’s warning for the web, Hay Festival 2017
Stephen Fry has issued a stark warning at the Hay festival in Powys to prepare for the future of the internet. He criticised the “technophobes”, including politicians, who he said had been much too slow in reacting to new technologies including artificial intelligence.
Stephen Fry has issued a stark warning at the Hay festival in Powys to prepare for the future of the internet. He criticised the “technophobes”, including politicians, who he said had been much too slow in reacting to new technologies including artificial intelligence. Steven Fry was delivering one of the Festival’s Reformations lectures – one of a series of special lectures inspired by the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s Protestant reformation. While it’s hard to calculate the cascade upon cascade of new developments and their positive effects, we already know the dire consequences and frightening scenarios that threaten to engulf us, Science fiction writers and dystopians have already laid out the nightmarish consequences, he added.

UK and France are leading Europe in harnessing audience data for digital ad campaigns and the successful delivery of digital advertising campaigns. The findings were included in a survey of seven key markets that included Germany, Spain, Italy, Poland, Denmark, France and the UK and was conducted by ExchangeWire and Xaxis. It found that a lack of quality data was the single biggest barrier, with 43% of media professionals blaming bad data for a lack of campaign planning and audience engagement. The UK and France scored 80% for satisfaction rates for sourcing demographic, behavioural and geo-location audience data and over 65% satisfaction for CRM, survey and financial scoring data, other continental markets performed less well.
