A new kids app was launched by YouTube yesterday in a bid to make YouTube safer for children to use. YouTube Kids will have parental controls and restrictions on who is able to upload content. The app will run apart from the main YouTube service and initially it will only be available in the US and is thought that it will be rolled-out in the UK later.  The parental controls are to include the functionality to limit the amount of time children can spend watching videos, along with a tool allowing the search function to be switched off. YouTube Kids will have channels and playlists organised into four categories: Shows, Music, Learning and Explore. Users will also be able to search for individual topics. The app will be free, but only available on Google's Android devices currently. The move has been welcomed by the NSPCC child protection charity.

The oil company Shell are well on their way to making mobile customer payments a realistic option for consumers and have recently announced a partnership with PayPal which will soon bring mobile payment solutions to petrol stations all over the UK later this year. Both companies hope that the partnership will bring more convenience and accessibility to customers, who will soon be able to pay for fuel via an app on their smartphone or tablet device. Shell hopes the app will be introduced at the vast majority of its 1,000 service stations across the country.

Malicious app to track Android phones through battery use was created

Android phones can be tracked without using their GPS or wi-fi data by studying their power use over time, a study has found. A smartphone in fact uses more power the further away it is from a cellular base and the more obstacles are in its way as it reaches for a signal. Additional power use by other activities could be factored out with algorithms, the researchers found. A malicious app designed to collect data about power consumption was created. This app has neither permission to access the GPS nor other location providers but has permission to access network connectivity and power data.
